Light Impact Global Institute officially celebrated its community launch with an evening of culture, leadership, and community engagement on February 21 in Lawrence, Kansas. The gathering brought together community leaders, scholars, faith leaders, and residents for a meaningful introduction to the institute’s mission and future work.
The event also attracted attendees from outside Lawrence, with guests traveling from as far as Manhattan, Kansas, as well as from Jefferson City, Missouri, Lincoln, Nebraska, Kansas City, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri to attend the community launch.
Guests began arriving shortly before 4:00 PM and were welcomed by music, cultural ambiance, and opportunities for informal networking. Light refreshments and finger foods were available as attendees connected and settled into the evening’s program.
The program opened with welcome remarks from the evening’s emcee, Jerome Okojokwu-Idu, who introduced the purpose of the gathering and the vision behind Light Impact Global Institute. A short cultural prelude featuring African music and dance set the tone for the evening and celebrated the rich cultural traditions that inspire the institute’s work.
Professor Andrew Wefald of Kansas State University, a board member of the institute, then introduced the founder, Dr. Chibuzor Mirian Azubuike. Dr. Azubuike delivered the keynote address titled “Clear the Snow, Find the Road: The Power of Resilience.” In her remarks, she reflected on the importance of perseverance, leadership, and building opportunities for women, girls, and young people across communities.
As part of the keynote moment, the founder was welcomed to the stage with a lively African cultural dance performance. The performance featured Nigerian cultural dance to African music, and the founder joined the dancers along with several children, creating a joyful and memorable moment that captivated the audience and celebrated African cultural expression.
Following the keynote, board members Pastor Eyitayo Awopetu and Margaret Okojokwu presented an overview of the institute’s mission and initiatives. They introduced two of the organization’s key programs: the Legal Support Fund and the African Women Graduate Fellowship. The presentation also included a brief invitation for community members to support the institute’s work through partnerships, sponsorships, and community engagement.
The program also featured a moving poetry performance titled “Letters of Love.”
Several community leaders and dignitaries shared brief remarks during the evening. Among those who spoke were Lawrence Mayor Brad Finkeldei, Adrianne Nuñez, Director of Communications at The Willow Domestic Violence Center, and Cindy Riling along with members of the Lawrence Central Rotary. Their reflections highlighted the importance of community collaboration and support for initiatives that strengthen families and empower women and young people.
The evening continued with a “Taste of Africa” food experience, where guests enjoyed a variety of African dishes representing different regions of the continent. The meal provided an opportunity for cultural exchange, conversation, and networking among attendees while African music and cultural expressions continued throughout the gathering.
The event concluded with closing remarks from the emcee, who expressed appreciation to sponsors, volunteers, board members, and community partners whose support made the launch possible.
The community launch marked an important milestone for Light Impact Global Institute as it begins its work to cultivate resilient leadership and expand opportunities for women, girls, and young people across communities in the United States and Africa.
